Tips for a successful surgery

When you come in for surgery, the hospital takes many steps to prepare for the procedure and you can help make that process easier by following all instructions and asking any questions you may have ahead of time.
Prior to arriving for a scheduled surgery, the pre-admission department reviews a patient's chart, medical history and previous tests. The registration department may contact you by phone prior to your arrival to confirm the following:
-
Name, address, Social Security number and date of birth.
-
Employer information.
-
Insurance information.
-
Medicare or Medicaid assistance, if applicable.
Depending on the type of surgery and whether a patient is being admitted to the hospital, he or she may meet with a nurse beforehand to discuss specific post-operative information and may meet with an anesthesiologist as well, said Linda Kyle, RN, Clinical Coordinator for Same Day Surgery and the Preadmission Department.
"It is important to make sure you understand any special preparations, such as dietary restrictions or medication, you are instructed to follow ahead of time," Ms. Kyle said. "Also, we will discuss expectations for after surgery, whether you will be in the Intensive Care Unit, if you will have a dressing or a drain. Patients also should bring a list of medications they are taking." Ms. Kyle said the most important thing patients can bring is patience.
"In Same Day Surgery, there can be delays because of unforeseen circumstances," she said. "People should plan to take the day and not be rushed."
She also said children aren't allowed to visit in Same Day Surgery, so if parents bring in a pediatric patient, they should find alternative care for their other children.
