Two new surgeons have joined Backus Physician Services to expand its plastic surgery and breast reconstruction options.

Thomas Cherry, Jr., MD, a member of the Backus Medical Staff for the past 26 years, joined BPS in January.

He specializes in plastic, cosmetic and hand surgeries - including a minimally invasive endoscopic carpal tunnel surgery and body-contouring procedures like abdominalplasty, also known as "tummy tucks." He is board-certified in plastic surgery and received a Certificate of Added Qualifications for hand surgery.

Dr. Thomas Cherry, Jr.Dr. Cherry's arrival comes soon after Vinod Pathy, MD, joined the Backus-affiliated practice. Dr. Pathy is a general surgeon who specializes in plastic and reconstructive surgery, including breast reconstruction for cancer patients. He also offers scar reduction procedures, which can include laser therapy, and other cosmetic procedures.

"I think we are going to have a mutual synergy," said Dr. Cherry, commenting on this relationship with Dr. Pathy.

Dr. Cherry said joining a hospital-affiliated practice will mean less time dealing with billing and other office issues, and more time focusing on patient care. He described Dr. Pathy, who is also board-certified in plastic surgery, as "able, affable and enjoyable."

Dr. Vinod PathyThe two new surgeons will practice in a new BPS office in the Backus Medical Office Building at 330 Washington St., Suite 410, Norwich.

Four other BPS surgeons - Sergio Casillas, MD, specializing in colon and rectal surgery as well as general surgery; Michael Deren, MD, specializing in thoracic surgery; Juan Escalon, MD, specializing in thoracic surgery; and Mark Tousignant, MD, specializing in general surgery - practice at 12 Case St. in Norwichtown.
