Don’t let the cold weather freeze your exercise routine

The weather is getting colder, and as the temperature drops, so does your desire to keep up with an exercise routine.
But it is important to continue to exercise, whether you take advantage of the seasonal opportunities or move your routine indoors.
Physical Therapist Geoff Fabry, outpatient supervisor for Backus Hospital's Rehabilitation Department Department, said the benefits of winter exercise include improved sleep, increased energy and decreased depression.
"Try to make it fun by participating in a winter sport, such as sledding, snowshoeing, skiing or skating, and exercise with a friend or family member for help with motivation," he said.
The Backus Hospital Rehabilitation Department will host a community program Thursday, Dec. 4, from 5-7 p.m. at the Backus Outpatient Care Center in Norwich. There will be a light dinner served and a tour of the facility, which is off Interstate 395.
The presentation, which will be about exercising safely in the winter, will begin at 6 p.m. There is no charge, but those planning to attend should call ahead to register. Members of the department will offer tips on exercise options, safety issues with winter exercising and being aware of your surroundings. For example, it is important to stay hydrated and dress in layers in the winter.
They also will demonstrate proper methods for shoveling snow to prevent back injuries.
As always, obtain approval from your doctor before beginning any exercise program if you have medical issues, especially if you will be exercising outdoors in the winter months.
