Backus extends community education cancellations

Because of a continued surge in H1N1 flu activity in the region, The William W. Backus Hospital has continued by two weeks the policy of canceling community programs at the hospital and Backus Outpatient Care Center - up to and including Nov. 29.
Events include community education, support groups and other activities that bring groups of people from the public into the hospital or its off site locations.
In addition, visitor restrictions remain in effect indefinitely.
In the Birthing Center, visitation is restricted to two grandparents and two adult birthing coaches.
Visitors to other patients must be 18 or older, and be free of flu symptoms, such as fever, cough or sore throat.
Because of the spread of H1N1 in the community, the hospital decided to adopt common sense precautions to protect its patients and staff, said Dr. Peter Shea, MD, Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer.
"It would be potentially harmful to bring community members together in a healthcare setting while we are experiencing a pandemic virus," Dr. Shea said. "Canceling group activities is a valuable intervention. ‘First, do no harm.'"
Dr. Shea stressed that most patients with flu-like symptoms do not need to visit the Emergency Department. He said for 90 percent of the population, simply staying home and resting is the best thing to do unless you have underlying medical conditions or severe symptoms.
H1N1 virus symptoms are similar to seasonal flu. Simple prevention steps can be taken to limit its transmission, including:
• Get a flu shot where they are available. The hospital does not have seasonal or swine flu shots available for the public. If you are seeking an H1N1 vaccine, speak with your personal physician first, and if they are not available call the Uncas Health District at 823-1189 ext. 113 or e-mail doh@uncashd.org
• Wash your hands.
• Cover your cough.
• Stay home when you are sick.
• Stay calm and informed. Visit backushospital.org/flu for the latest updates, or call its new flu hotline at 425-5800.
