The William W. Backus Hospital is conducting a community health assessment and is asking residents in New London and Windham counties to participate.

Beginning March 15, randomly selected residents will receive phone calls and be asked questions designed to determine key health issues in the eastern Connecticut region.

The call is expected to take about 10 to 15 minutes and is conducted by the Holleran research firm of Pennsylvania, which specializes in community health research.
Residents with caller ID will see a phone number that includes a 717 area code.

Janette Polaski, Manager of Community Benefits at Backus, is leading the Backus health system's community health assessment process. Ms. Polaski said that issues identified in previous assessments have included smoking, lack of physical activity, high cholesterol and other factors that can lead to diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other long term ailments.

"Surveys like these help us identify health risks and develop initiatives to improve the health of our communities," Polaski said. "Please take the time to participate so that we can create a healthcare roadmap for the future."
