Tai Chi master David Chandler will demonstrate how Tai Chi can be used to cleanse the body of toxins and help relax and empower cancer patients.
The free community event on Dec. 11 will include information about Windhorse Qigong, which is used as a treatment for cancer in China.
Tai Chi, sometimes described as meditation in motion, focuses on breathing and gentle movements. Both Tai Chi and Qigong have been recognized as integral parts of a holistic system of healthcare in Asia for several thousand years. These techniques are now gaining attention in the West as research demonstrates growing evidence of their positive healthcare benefits.
This is the final offering in the four-part fall oncology series, “Awakening the Inner Healer.” The series, offered by the Backus Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI), is geared towards people living with cancer and those in recovery from cancer.
Windhorse is a type of Walking Qigong, which stimulates the lymphatic system and dynamically cleanses the body. It can be done indoors or outdoors, standing in place or while walking. Mr. Chandler explained the movements include specific placement of hands and body, as well as breathing techniques to rid the body of toxins.
“You are cleaning out your body through your breath, and amplifying the body’s own healing system,” he said. He has been practicing Tai Chi for more than 30 years, and recently returned from a trip to China, where he studied with Eastern Tai Chi masters.
The Backus Foundation’s Breast Cancer Survivors Fund sponsored the fall series.
“We hope to offer cancer survivors and their caregivers information they can incorporate into their lives to support their healing,” said Amy Dunion, RN, Coordinator of CHI.
