Backus health centers offer flu shots

NORWICH - The Backus health centers in Colchester, Montville and Gales Ferry are offering flu shots to the public.
Call ahead of time to ensure that there is adequate supply. The Colchester number is 537-4601, Gales Ferry is 464-3100 and Montville is 848-1298.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are at high risk and should be vaccinated each year include:
- Children ages 6 months up to their 19th birthday.
- Pregnant women.
- People ages 50 and older.
- People of any age with certain chronic medical conditions.
- People who live in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities.
- People who live with or care for those at high risk for developing complications from the flu, including healthcare workers.
Robin Heard, RN, Nurse Epidemiologist at Backus Hospital, offers these tips to reduce the spread of the flu:
- Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
- Stay home if you are sick.
- Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing.
- Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
- Wash your hands often.
