NORWICH - The William W. Backus Hospital Department of Psychiatric Services will offer a community education event about "animal hoarding" on Aug. 27 from 3-4 p.m. in entry level conference rooms 1 and 2.

People who fill their homes with cats, dogs and other animals might be mentally ill. Holly E. Dreger, a Norwich Diocese social worker and Director of Behavioral Health Services, Catholic Charities & Family Services, will present "Animal Hoarding: Mental Illness or Public Service?"

The free program, open to the public, will examine what animal hoarding is, how it develops, its impact, treatment and available resources.
