Advanced Reiki Training

Free Community Prostate Screening
Urologists Franklin Friedman, MD and Richard Colman, MD, will perform a digital rectal exam and blood tests (PSA). Participants will need to call the doctor that performs their exam to find out their PSA result one week following the screening. Educational materials will be available.

Head to Toe Health Talk: "Migraines and Other Pains in the Head"
Anthony Alessi, MD, Chief of Neurology at Backus Hospital, will discuss various symptoms, strategies, and treatment options to deal with migraines. A question and answer session will follow the talk.

Healing Touch Level I
A relaxing, nurturing energy therapy that assists in balancing your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing. Healing Touch works with your energy field to support your natural ability to heal. Earn18 Continuing Education credits. Class will be held in the conference rooms of Backus Hospital on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 11 and 12 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. To register, please call Kathy Noyes, at 886-1960. Heart Walk
The Mobile Health Resource Center will be on-site during the Heart Walk at Rocky Neck State Park. Free blood pressure screenings will be offered to the community.

Mammograms and Pap Smear Screenings

This program is free to women with no health insurance or whose insurance does not cover these services. Mammograms are provided through Backus Hospital and their satellite mammography sites. Pap smears and clinical breast exams are offered through a selection of Backus affiliated physician groups or clinics. Meditation for Everyone
Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Instructor: Marie Perez.

Pinktober Concert at the Hard Rock Cafe

Hard Rock Cafe will hold a Pinktober concert Oct. 9 to benefit the Backus Breast Health Initiatives. The $30 ticket will include dinner and an open bar from 6-8 p.m. For ticket information call the Backus Foundation at 860-823- 6331

Power and Masculinity; A Workshop for Men with Paul Dunion
Men have learned to settle for worldly expressions of power such as a well-paying job, lucrative financial investments and ability to influence decisions makers. In this workshop we will examine forms of personal empowerment which deepen the meaning of men's lives, enhance our capacity to create intimate relationships and allow us to live closer to our life's purpose. We will also explore what it means to move beyond being a gatherer of information and begin to sow the seeds of wisdom.

Prepare for Surgery - Heal Faster
Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful for many other procedures to help lessen anxiety. A friend or family member may accompany the patient.

Reiki Training, Level I and II
Reiki (Ray key), an energy therapy, is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. Reiki is useful for practitioners, caregivers and for self-care. Participants may register for Level I and /or Level II classes. Instructor: Marie Perez, Reiki Master.

Scotland Wellness Fair


Come take the Backus Pledge, a no smoking pledge aimed at all age groups. The "Smoking Stinks" program provides educational printed and visual information on the consequences and damage to the body that smoking provides.

Nurturing Your Newborn - An Infant Care Class
This two-hour class teaches about normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding, newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.

Parents To Be Open House
Informational session and a tour of the Birthing Center. Speakers include OB doctor and/or midwife, pediatrician, breast feeding consultant, visiting nurses, birthing class instructor, birth registry/paternity coordinator and various other educational materials available. Tours start at 6:15 p.m. Speakers will start at 7 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

Signing Safari Parent Workshops
Learn the benefits of using American Sign Language with your hearing baby. Decrease fussiness while improving communication and have fun at the same time. This 2-hour call teaches common signs that you will use with your baby or toddler. Also includes DVD and Pictionary of over 100 signs. Held in the Backus Hospital Birthing Center.

HIV Education and Testing Site

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic
