Awakening the Inner Healer: A Fall Oncology Series for People Living with Cancer
EMBRACING WHOLENESS: A Sound Healing Meditation Using her voice and quartz crystal singing bowls, Pamela Julien, Clinical Psychologist and advanced Holographic Sound Healer will guide you to a place of deep relaxation, where you can release pain and negative energy as your body's self-healing abilities are strengthened and enhanced. Sound vibration helps reduce stress, promotes a deep calm and inner peace, and clears and rebalances the body's energies. The Fall Oncology Series is generously supported by the Backus Breast Cancer Survivors Fund.

TAI CHI AND QI GONG for Health and Healing. Tai Chi Master David Chandler will present a demonstration with specific information about Tai Chi as a health practice and a workshop on the practice of Wind-horse Qi Gong, which is used as a treatment for cancer in China. There will be mental and gentle physical exercises involved in the workshop. The series is generously supported by the Backus Breast Cancer Survivors Fund.

Healthy Habits Showcase - Mohegan Sun
Free foot screenings will be conducted by one of Backus Hospital's Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurses from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. A Respiratory Department staff member will provide information on the dangers of smoking and urge people to take the "No Smoking" pledge from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Physical Therapists from Backus Home Health Care will be performing fall risk screenings and providing fall prevention information from 1-4 p.m. For more information on this event, click here.

Mammograms and Pap Smear Screenings
This program is free to women with no health insurance or whose insurance does not cover these services. Mammograms are provided through Backus Hospital and their satellite mammography sites. Pap smears and clinical breast exams are offered through a selection of Backus affiliated physician groups or clinics. Meditation for Everyone
Meditation can help you deal with stress and pain and can be part of treatment for conditions including hypertension and heart disease. Come quiet your mind and body, release the stress of your day and enter stillness, clarity, and peace. Instructor: Marie Perez. These are the last three classes in a six-week series.

Operating Room Open House
See the latest advances in surgical technology at Backus Hospital, including the da Vinci surgical robot and OtisKnee replacement procedures. Tours of the operating room and other information will also be available. Event is held in conjunction with National PeriOperative Nurse Week.

Prepare for Surgery - Heal Faster
Using Guided Imagery and relaxation helps people feel calmer before surgery, have less pain after surgery and recover more quickly. The techniques are also helpful for many other procedures to help lessen anxiety. The patient will receive a book and CD or tape and take one 90 minute instructional class. Ideally the class is taken 1-3 weeks prior to surgery. Classes are offered each Monday and Wednesday. A friend or family member may accompany the patient.

This acclaimed weight reduction program will give you the tools you need to lose weight and maintain healthy eating habits. Come learn the importance of combining proper portions within the five food groups for nutritious and healthy eating. Thin's In combines balanced eating, exercise and behavior modification, which will leave you feeling satisfied and healthy. Instructor: Dianne Rubin.

Happiest Baby on the Block
Would you like to learn how to calm your new baby's cries...in minutes? Learn why your baby is crying and how to turn on the calming reflex so that you baby can be happy and sleep longer. This 2-hour class includes the information you need to help your baby and a parent kit for use at home. May be taken while pregnant or in the first weeks at home. Held in the Backus Hospital Birthing Center.

HypnoBirthing Class

New Moms' Support Group
Open to mom's of babies up to 6 months. It's a place to ask questions in a supportive environment, talk to other new moms about concerns, like postpartum issues, breastfeeding, feeding issues and infant care. Group is facilitated by the Lactation Consultant/educator.

Nurturing Your Newborn - An Infant Care Class
This two-hour class teaches about normal newborn behavior, tests and procedures in the hospital, and how to care for your baby in the first few days at home. Topics include: safe sleep, swaddling, bath demonstration, feeding,newborn appearance and behaviors and when to call the doctor.

Sibling Class

Signing Safari Parent Workshops
Learn the benefits of using American Sign Language with your hearing baby. Decrease fussiness while improving communication and have fun at the same time. This 2-hour class teaches common signs that you will use with your baby or toddler. Also includes DVD and Pictionary of over 100 signs. Held in the Backus Hospital Birthing Center.

Relaxation and Restoration
The Backus Hospital's Center for Healthcare Integration (CHI) offers Acupuncture, Healing Touch, Therapeutic Massage (Swedish, Deep Tissue, and Hot Stone Therapy), Reflexology and Reiki sessions to the community by hospital-credentialed therapists. No referral is needed.

Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic
Diagnosis and treatment of most sexually transmitted diseases; HIV and Hepatitis C testing is available. Mondays and Wednesdays, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m., at 107 Lafayette Street, Norwich. No appointment needed. No new registrations accepted after 7 p.m. Program free. Call 823-6344 for more information.

The Evening Diabetes Support Group is usually offered every other month on the first Wednesday.
