Report from the William W. Backus Hospital Auxiliary

The Backus Hospital Auxiliary has but one purpose: To assist the hospital in any way we can. Our $600,000 pledge to the BackusCare capital campaign is the largest commitment we have ever strived to fulfill. That's appropriate, because it is the largest project our hospital has ever undertaken. I was proud to be able to present a $120,000 check — our third installment of this pledge — to Mr. Pipicelli at our Auxiliary's Annual Meeting on Oct. 9.
Fundraising is the only way we are able to continue this commitment. Our major fundraising event, the fourth annual Mini-Golf Tournament at Odetah Campground, was a huge success. Not only did it raise funds, it brought together friends for a common goal. The community, Auxiliary members and hospital staff showed their support. I would especially like to acknowledge the Adelman family for their generosity and assistance.
One of the most rewarding services the Auxiliary provides is to present two $2,000 scholarships to selected graduates entering a health-related field. Often, our members are so concerned with raising funds that we forget to enjoy the benefits our fundraising efforts provide. As always, at the May Membership Tea, Auxiliary members were able to experience pride and satisfaction when the scholarship presentations were made.
With the renovated Emergency Department and Same Day Surgery area, the Auxiliary realized that an additional canteen area, with beverages and snacks, would be an asset for persons in the waiting area. Additional profits are realized through these canteen areas, along with the one in the main corridor.
Our Gift Shop continues to grow in the variety of items it offers, and expands its reputation as a "boutique." Wonderful volunteers attend to the Gift Shop daily. Throughout the year, the Auxiliary sponsors vendors who offer a diversity of products for sale.
Our Auxiliary provides several services that are small in size but have a big impact. The popular File of Life is medical profile that can be a life-saver for providing information in an emergency. After-surgery camisoles help comfort cancer patients, and "cure-chiefs" — hand-sewn head dressings — are donated for chemotherapy patients. Tray favors allow the Auxiliary to cheer patients near holidays. Surgical caps, made of attractive children's theme material, are given to pediatric patients prior to surgery in the Same Day Surgery area.
Everything the Auxiliary accomplishes is because of the commitment and dedication of numerous individuals who are always willing to volunteer. I have received tremendous support from the Auxiliary Board, the officers and committee chairpersons, and all who work at the hospital, during my first year as president. I am looking forward, with anticipation, to the second half of my term as president.
