Dinner lecture series to focus on lung cancer

The next Cancer Services Dinner at Backus event will focus on lung cancer, to be held on Wednesday, March 12 from 5-7 p.m. in entry level conference rooms 1, 2, 3.

The program is free but registration is required by calling ext. 6379.

The program includes a free dinner, panel discussion and presentations from several physicians on the Backus Medical Staff and others, including: 

  • Setu Vora, MD, a pulmonologist and critical care specialist on the Backus Medical Staff, discussing screening and prevention.
  • Rachel Blitzblau, MD, a radiation oncologist on the Backus Medical Staff, discussing the role of radiation therapy in lung cancer.
  • Mandeep Dhami, MD, an oncologist on the Backus Medical Staff, discussing medical management of lung cancer.
  • Merle Stoner, Executive Director of the local chapter of the American Cancer Society, discussing resources available to patients. A panel discussion will follow. 

There were 2000 new lung cancer cases in Connecticut in the past year, and 213,000 nationwide, said Donna Goss, Certified Cancer Registrar at Backus Hospital. Deaths from lung cancer in Connecticut totaled 1,860, with 162,460 nationwide.

 The no. 1 way to prevent lung cancer is to quit smoking, Ms. Goss said.
